This article introduces three different programs, sponsored by the IRS, to file your taxes 4 free: Free File, VITA, and TCE.
freeFile is a program intended to facilitate electronic filing. This program was created by the IRS and a group of private companies that offer eFile software online, Free File Alliance LLC.
There are two modalities to freeFile. “Traditional Free File” is targeted to income taxpayers with low and moderate income; in average people with an adjusted gross income of no more than $57,000. “Free File Fillable Forms” is targeted to anyone who feels comfortable filling the standard paper forms, but who wants to submit their taxes electronically; there are no income limitations to be able to use this online software.

The VITA program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, is intended to provide PERSONAL help to taxpayers of low to moderate income; in average, taxpayers with gross adjusted income of no more than $49,000. This program is funded by the IRS, and implemented by non-for-profit organizations.

The TCE program, Tax Counseling for the Elderly, provides personal help to taxpayers aged 60 or more. This program is funded by the IRS, and implemented by the AARP (“Tax-Aide Counseling Program”).
